(USU Service Management)<\/strong> with <strong data-prosemirror-content-type=\"mark\" data-prosemirror-mark-name=\"strong\">Jira<\/strong>.<\/p><h2 data-local-id=\"9096c036fd3e\" data-prosemirror-content-type=\"node\" data-prosemirror-node-name=\"heading\" data-prosemirror-node-block=\"true\">Introduction<\/h2><p data-local-id=\"7478a82977b8\" data-prosemirror-content-type=\"node\" data-prosemirror-node-name=\"paragraph\" data-prosemirror-node-block=\"true\"><strong data-prosemirror-content-type=\"mark\" data-prosemirror-mark-name=\"strong\">USU Service Management (USM)<\/strong> is an IT Service Management (ITSM) software solution developed by the German company <strong data-prosemirror-content-type=\"mark\" data-prosemirror-mark-name=\"strong\">USU<\/strong>. It supports ITSM processes, Service Desk operations, and more. The platform is highly customizable and can handle complex workflows, which can be designed directly using <strong data-prosemirror-content-type=\"mark\" data-prosemirror-mark-name=\"strong\">BPMN 2.0<\/strong>.<\/p><p data-local-id=\"ae0ca51662ad\" data-prosemirror-content-type=\"node\" data-prosemirror-node-name=\"paragraph\" data-prosemirror-node-block=\"true\"><strong data-prosemirror-content-type=\"mark\" data-prosemirror-mark-name=\"strong\">Atlassian Jira<\/strong> is a&nbsp;widely used solution originally designed for managing software development. Today, it has evolved into a&nbsp;comprehensive platform for managing many different types of projects. The related product <strong data-prosemirror-content-type=\"mark\" data-prosemirror-mark-name=\"strong\">Jira Service Management (JSM)<\/strong> represents a&nbsp;modern ITSM tool built on the Jira platform.<\/p><h2 data-local-id=\"30d54480be88\" data-prosemirror-content-type=\"node\" data-prosemirror-node-name=\"heading\" data-prosemirror-node-block=\"true\">Why connect Jira with USM?<\/h2><p data-local-id=\"d3c3f713925f\" data-prosemirror-content-type=\"node\" data-prosemirror-node-name=\"paragraph\" data-prosemirror-node-block=\"true\">Both systems manage tasks within different processes. In our client projects, we have encountered several scenarios where integrating the two systems brings clear benefits.<\/p><h3 data-local-id=\"8ff95572134d\" data-prosemirror-content-type=\"node\" data-prosemirror-node-name=\"heading\" data-prosemirror-node-block=\"true\">Company using both tools for different processes<\/h3><p data-local-id=\"9a79ea1344c3\" data-prosemirror-content-type=\"node\" data-prosemirror-node-name=\"paragraph\" data-prosemirror-node-block=\"true\">Some companies run their <strong data-prosemirror-content-type=\"mark\" data-prosemirror-mark-name=\"strong\">Service Desk in USM<\/strong> while managing <strong data-prosemirror-content-type=\"mark\" data-prosemirror-mark-name=\"strong\">software development in Jira<\/strong>. In such cases, synchronization between Service Desk tickets from customers (end users) and the development team is crucial for quickly sharing information and the status of ongoing work.<\/p><h3 data-local-id=\"332b85167546\" data-prosemirror-content-type=\"node\" data-prosemirror-node-name=\"heading\" data-prosemirror-node-block=\"true\">Organization uses USM internally and external partners use Jira<\/h3><p data-local-id=\"b043f7e2397d\" data-prosemirror-content-type=\"node\" data-prosemirror-node-name=\"paragraph\" data-prosemirror-node-block=\"true\">Another common scenario is when a&nbsp;company uses <strong data-prosemirror-content-type=\"mark\" data-prosemirror-mark-name=\"strong\">USM internally<\/strong> for Service Desk and other processes but collaborates with <strong data-prosemirror-content-type=\"mark\" data-prosemirror-mark-name=\"strong\">external partners who operate their Service Desk in Jira Service Management<\/strong>. In this case, creating and updating tickets in the partner system should be automated.<\/p><h3 data-local-id=\"388933c2c67d\" data-prosemirror-content-type=\"node\" data-prosemirror-node-name=\"heading\" data-prosemirror-node-block=\"true\">One USM instance connected to multiple Jira instances<\/h3><p data-local-id=\"9b264dd099b0\" data-prosemirror-content-type=\"node\" data-prosemirror-node-name=\"paragraph\" data-prosemirror-node-block=\"true\">It is also common for <strong data-prosemirror-content-type=\"mark\" data-prosemirror-mark-name=\"strong\">one USM system to be connected to multiple Jira instances<\/strong> (for example from different partners or internal departments). This scenario requires multiple interfaces, sometimes with different technical or logical configurations. Nevertheless, overall synchronization can still be achieved.<\/p><p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-6177\" src=\"https:\/\/www.sykorait.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/Navrh-bez-nazvu-5-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"Multiple instnaces\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.sykorait.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/Navrh-bez-nazvu-5-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.sykorait.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/Navrh-bez-nazvu-5-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.sykorait.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/Navrh-bez-nazvu-5-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.sykorait.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/Navrh-bez-nazvu-5.jpg 1536w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p><p data-local-id=\"76c3058c3fdd\" data-prosemirror-content-type=\"node\" data-prosemirror-node-name=\"paragraph\" data-prosemirror-node-block=\"true\">The main idea is to <strong data-prosemirror-content-type=\"mark\" data-prosemirror-mark-name=\"strong\">avoid manual retyping of tickets from one system into another<\/strong>.<\/p><h2 data-local-id=\"55ae954364a3\" data-prosemirror-content-type=\"node\" data-prosemirror-node-name=\"heading\" data-prosemirror-node-block=\"true\">How we do it<\/h2><p data-local-id=\"13291af3114d\" data-prosemirror-content-type=\"node\" data-prosemirror-node-name=\"paragraph\" data-prosemirror-node-block=\"true\">Based on customer requirements, we developed the <strong data-prosemirror-content-type=\"mark\" data-prosemirror-mark-name=\"strong\">USU Service Management Connector for Jira<\/strong> several years ago and have continuously extended it since then.<\/p><p data-local-id=\"e052420597b4\" data-prosemirror-content-type=\"node\" data-prosemirror-node-name=\"paragraph\" data-prosemirror-node-block=\"true\">The solution consists of:<\/p><ul><li data-local-id=\"4ae3ec9ed2a4\" data-prosemirror-content-type=\"node\" data-prosemirror-node-name=\"paragraph\" data-prosemirror-node-block=\"true\"><strong data-prosemirror-content-type=\"mark\" data-prosemirror-mark-name=\"strong\">Jira app available on the Atlassian Marketplace<\/strong><\/li><li data-local-id=\"fdc2a34b3c3a\" data-prosemirror-content-type=\"node\" data-prosemirror-node-name=\"paragraph\" data-prosemirror-node-block=\"true\"><strong data-prosemirror-content-type=\"mark\" data-prosemirror-mark-name=\"strong\">corresponding USM customization package<\/strong><\/li><\/ul><p>The app is available for <strong data-prosemirror-content-type=\"mark\" data-prosemirror-mark-name=\"strong\">Jira Cloud<\/strong> and <strong data-prosemirror-content-type=\"mark\" data-prosemirror-mark-name=\"strong\">Jira Data Center<\/strong>.<\/p><h2 data-local-id=\"d09f9d26bb77\" data-prosemirror-content-type=\"node\" data-prosemirror-node-name=\"heading\" data-prosemirror-node-block=\"true\">Challenges we encountered<\/h2><p data-local-id=\"4adea41a25d0\" data-prosemirror-content-type=\"node\" data-prosemirror-node-name=\"paragraph\" data-prosemirror-node-block=\"true\">Apart from typical integration challenges such as <strong data-prosemirror-content-type=\"mark\" data-prosemirror-mark-name=\"strong\">field mapping, event handling, and interface configuration<\/strong>, we also encountered and solved the following technical challenges:<\/p><h3 data-local-id=\"e7cae24598c8\" data-prosemirror-content-type=\"node\" data-prosemirror-node-name=\"heading\" data-prosemirror-node-block=\"true\">Transport of attachments in both directions<\/h3><p data-local-id=\"3739a2573269\" data-prosemirror-content-type=\"node\" data-prosemirror-node-name=\"paragraph\" data-prosemirror-node-block=\"true\">Jira and USM store attachments in different ways. Therefore, we had to implement a&nbsp;mechanism outside the standard capabilities of the <strong data-prosemirror-content-type=\"mark\" data-prosemirror-mark-name=\"strong\">USM Generic Interface<\/strong> to properly transfer attachments between the systems.<\/p><h3 data-local-id=\"a368660bb549\" data-prosemirror-content-type=\"node\" data-prosemirror-node-name=\"heading\" data-prosemirror-node-block=\"true\">Synchronization of rich text fields<\/h3><p data-local-id=\"47ca40b0b638\" data-prosemirror-content-type=\"node\" data-prosemirror-node-name=\"paragraph\" data-prosemirror-node-block=\"true\">Both Jira and USM support <strong data-prosemirror-content-type=\"mark\" data-prosemirror-mark-name=\"strong\">formatted text fields with embedded images<\/strong>. This was particularly challenging because both systems use different formats. Embedded images need to be transferred first and then correctly referenced by links within the synchronized content.<\/p><p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-6170 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.sykorait.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/USM-Jira-1-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"Rich Text Field\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.sykorait.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/USM-Jira-1-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.sykorait.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/USM-Jira-1-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.sykorait.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/USM-Jira-1-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.sykorait.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/USM-Jira-1.jpg 1536w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p><h3 data-local-id=\"e6d2e180a941\" data-prosemirror-content-type=\"node\" data-prosemirror-node-name=\"heading\" data-prosemirror-node-block=\"true\">Authentication and Generic Interface messages<\/h3><p data-local-id=\"5c6a9ecd3cc9\" data-prosemirror-content-type=\"node\" data-prosemirror-node-name=\"paragraph\" data-prosemirror-node-block=\"true\">USM Generic Interfaces use a&nbsp;<strong data-prosemirror-content-type=\"mark\" data-prosemirror-mark-name=\"strong\">less common authentication format<\/strong>, which required us to implement special handling within the Jira app, including custom request formatting.<\/p><h3 data-local-id=\"6e5ddd8bcca4\" data-prosemirror-content-type=\"node\" data-prosemirror-node-name=\"heading\" data-prosemirror-node-block=\"true\">Opening communication between USM and Jira<\/h3><p data-local-id=\"7de135cfaed6\" data-prosemirror-content-type=\"node\" data-prosemirror-node-name=\"paragraph\" data-prosemirror-node-block=\"true\">In many projects, the most challenging part is establishing <strong data-prosemirror-content-type=\"mark\" data-prosemirror-mark-name=\"strong\">secure communication between USM and Jira<\/strong>, especially due to client security policies.<\/p><p data-local-id=\"0a691724b358\" data-prosemirror-content-type=\"node\" data-prosemirror-node-name=\"paragraph\" data-prosemirror-node-block=\"true\">This is particularly complex when connecting <strong data-prosemirror-content-type=\"mark\" data-prosemirror-mark-name=\"strong\">on-premise USM environments with Atlassian Cloud<\/strong>. Successful setup requires close cooperation with the client\u2019s <strong data-prosemirror-content-type=\"mark\" data-prosemirror-mark-name=\"strong\">infrastructure and security teams<\/strong>.<\/p><p data-local-id=\"c628f08ee13e\" data-prosemirror-content-type=\"node\" data-prosemirror-node-name=\"paragraph\" data-prosemirror-node-block=\"true\">There are multiple ways to configure this connection, and each project typically requires an <strong data-prosemirror-content-type=\"mark\" data-prosemirror-mark-name=\"strong\">individual solution<\/strong>.<\/p><p data-local-id=\"b59a9393b692\" data-prosemirror-content-type=\"node\" data-prosemirror-node-name=\"paragraph\" data-prosemirror-node-block=\"true\">We can also support clients running <strong data-prosemirror-content-type=\"mark\" data-prosemirror-mark-name=\"strong\">USM in the SaaS environment hosted by USU<\/strong>, which can be integrated using <strong data-prosemirror-content-type=\"mark\" data-prosemirror-mark-name=\"strong\">Orchestra interfaces<\/strong>.<\/p><h2 data-local-id=\"8def09d7b78c\" data-prosemirror-content-type=\"node\" data-prosemirror-node-name=\"heading\" data-prosemirror-node-block=\"true\">Can the connector be used for a&nbsp;migration from USM to Jira?<\/h2><p data-local-id=\"a1996fa98924\" data-prosemirror-content-type=\"node\" data-prosemirror-node-name=\"paragraph\" data-prosemirror-node-block=\"true\">Yes. The <strong data-prosemirror-content-type=\"mark\" data-prosemirror-mark-name=\"strong\">USM component of the connector<\/strong> can serve as a&nbsp;foundation for such a&nbsp;migration.<\/p><p data-local-id=\"c97d3d1ec776\" data-prosemirror-content-type=\"node\" data-prosemirror-node-name=\"paragraph\" data-prosemirror-node-block=\"true\">However, the app itself is primarily designed as a&nbsp;<strong data-prosemirror-content-type=\"mark\" data-prosemirror-mark-name=\"strong\">live bidirectional integration<\/strong>, not as a&nbsp;migration tool. A&nbsp;migration can be performed as part of a&nbsp;custom project, and the USM part of the connector can significantly speed up the process.<\/p><h2 data-local-id=\"be026fe06667\"
